Industrial level sensors for tank monitoring

Industrial Automation | Process Monitoring

Level sensors play a critical role in industrial safety and operational continuity. They monitor and control the height of liquids in tanks, wells, reservoirs, and process vessels, ensuring storage systems operate within safe and controlled limits.

When level monitoring fails, the consequences are immediate. Tanks overflow. Pumps run dry. Fuel supplies are interrupted. Chemical storage becomes unsafe. Production slows or stops entirely.

Reliable level measurement prevents these issues by providing accurate, real-time visibility into storage conditions. When integrated into automation systems, level sensors shift operations from reactive troubleshooting to proactive control.

Modern hydrostatic and ultrasonic technologies allow facilities to monitor liquid levels continuously while enabling automated response through PLC, SCADA, HMI, and cloud-based platforms.

What Is a Level Sensor?

A level sensor measures the height of liquid or solid material inside a container and converts that measurement into an electrical signal for monitoring and control systems.

Industrial applications typically rely on two measurement approaches: continuous level measurement and point level detection.

Continuous measurement provides real-time proportional data representing the exact liquid level. This supports automation, trending, and predictive maintenance.

Point level detection activates when a predefined threshold is reached. It functions as a safety trigger for high-level overflow alarms or low-level dry-run protection. In critical systems, both methods are often combined to increase reliability and reduce operational risk.

Hydrostatic Level Sensors

GLT-1000L | GLT-1000LD | GLT-1000LW

Hydrostatic level sensors measure liquid height using pressure at the bottom of a tank or well.

As liquid depth increases, static pressure increases proportionally. The transmitter calculates level using the relationship between pressure, liquid density, and gravity. This principle allows accurate measurement even in deep installations.

These sensors are constructed with stainless-steel submersible housings and diffused silicon or MEMS sensing elements, delivering long-term stability in demanding environments. A vented cable design provides automatic barometric compensation, maintaining accuracy in open systems exposed to atmospheric changes.

Measurement ranges extend up to 200 metres, making the GLT-1000 series suitable for deep wells, groundwater monitoring, and reservoir applications.

The GLT-1000L supports standard submerged installations.
The GLT-1000LD integrates a digital display for on-site level indication.
The GLT-1000LW includes 4G wireless telemetry, cloud connectivity, and Bluetooth configuration for remote infrastructure.

Hydrostatic sensors are commonly used in reservoirs, dams, wastewater pits, irrigation storage tanks, and boreholes where durability and deep-range capability are required.

Ultrasonic Level Sensors

GUL-1000H | GUL-1000 Series

Ultrasonic level sensors provide non-contact measurement using time-of-flight echo technology.

The sensor emits an ultrasonic pulse toward the liquid surface. The reflected signal is measured and converted into distance. Built-in temperature compensation ensures stable readings under varying environmental conditions.

Because the sensor does not contact the liquid, ultrasonic models are well suited for corrosive, contaminated, or slurry-based applications where maintenance exposure must be minimized.

Measurement ranges extend from 0โ€“15 metres for the GUL-1000H up to 50 metres for the broader GUL-1000 Series.

Available output options include 4โ€“20 mA, RS232, RS485, and relay signals, allowing seamless integration into industrial automation systems.

Ultrasonic sensors are frequently installed in chemical tanks, sewage treatment plants, cooling towers, open channels, and fuel storage systems.

Tank Monitoring Across Critical Industries

Level sensors protect infrastructure across a wide range of industrial environments.

In water and wastewater systems, accurate level monitoring prevents overflow, stabilises pump sequencing, and improves visibility across distributed assets such as reservoirs and stormwater pits.

In fuel storage, continuous level measurement prevents overfilling and ensures continuity of supply for generators and critical equipment.

In chemical processing, stable level control reduces spill risk and maintains dosing accuracy. Non-contact ultrasonic technology is particularly valuable in aggressive or corrosive media.

Across all these applications, level sensors function as protective infrastructure rather than simple measurement devices.

Integration with Automation and Alarm Systems

Level sensors deliver maximum value when integrated into control architecture.

Supported communication protocols include 4โ€“20 mA analog output, RS485 Modbus, RS232, HART, and wireless 4G telemetry.

Integration enables automatic pump control, high- and low-level alarms, overflow shutdown, remote notifications, and compliance logging. These capabilities reduce manual inspection, limit human error, and strengthen operational resilience.

For remote facilities, wireless telemetry reduces cabling requirements and supports centralised monitoring through cloud dashboards.

Industrial Durability and Protection

Industrial environments demand robust instrumentation. The GLT and GUL series are engineered with protection ratings up to IP67 and IP68, with explosion-proof configurations available for hazardous areas.

Stainless-steel housings resist corrosion and vibration, while temperature compensation maintains signal stability. These features support long-term reliability in water utilities, mining operations, agriculture, energy infrastructure, and manufacturing plants.

Reliable level detection is not an optional upgrade. It is a foundational element of safe and efficient industrial operations.

Securing Infrastructure, Supporting Operations

With advanced hydrostatic and ultrasonic level sensing technologies, APS Technology continues to deliver industrial solutions designed to protect assets, strengthen automation, and reduce operational risk.

Accurate level monitoring prevents overflows, protects pumps from dry-run damage, and ensures safe storage across water treatment facilities, fuel depots, chemical processing plants, and remote infrastructure sites. Whether upgrading an existing system or implementing smart monitoring capabilities, reliable level detection supports continuity, compliance, and long-term performance.
